Professional
Before beginning my graduate studies in 2021, I built a strong foundation in entrepreneurship and business leadership through owning and operating two small businesses in Iowa City. These ventures not only strengthened my skills in management, finance, and customer service but also allowed me to combine my academic interests with real-world applications.
My passion for China has always extended beyond scholarship and into everyday cultural experiences. In 2016, I co-founded Bao Chow, a restaurant specializing in handmade 包子 (baozi). What began as a small concept quickly grew into a successful enterprise featuring a wider range of Chinese street food, reflecting both my academic interest in Chinese culture and my entrepreneurial drive.
In 2018, I broadened my business portfolio by purchasing a local coffee shop. Drawing on my previous years of management experience, I revitalized the space into a thriving community hub, introducing new menu options and expanding its reach. I remained as owner-operator until June 2023, when I made the decision to sell the business and devote myself fully to graduate studies and research.
Alongside my entrepreneurial endeavors, I have pursued opportunities to support students in higher education. In April 2022, I joined the Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa as the Assistant Director of the Vaughan Institute of Risk Management & Insurance. In this role, I advised undergraduate students, managed strategic initiatives, and collaborated with faculty and corporate partners to grow the program by more than 150%. This position allowed me to bridge my MBA training in management, innovation, and risk with my passion for mentoring students and advancing academic programs.
Since 2024, I have served as an Access Consultant for Student Disability Services at the University of Iowa, where I collaborate with students, faculty, and staff to ensure equitable access across multiple colleges. This dynamic role allows me to combine my background in teaching, communication, and student support with my ongoing commitment to inclusivity and academic success.
